1.) Fix up any mistakes from last week's homework.

2.) Each of you will be assigned a country or influential media organization. Your job is to look at how that country/organization is reacting to the news that is coming out of Libya. We will gather next Tuesday and, during first period, collaborate.

You need to find at least five different news articles (not editorials) that deal with the topic. Give a one paragraph synopsis of those articles and be prepared to share them. Your synopsis should also include a brief explanation of who the author is. Also, be prepared to answer this question...

The situation in Libya keeps getting more and more interesting. It appears there may be military intervention by The U.S. and other Security Council Members. Qadaffi has apparently broken the ceasefire. Check out the video, the links, and the other news clips.

Homework for Week 5

Hello, مرحبا , and Здраво,

Here is this weeks homework...

1.) You need to relay this week's decisions about the schedule, logistics, and topics to the Student Union. I will relay the information to Teacher David. We'll go from there. let's plan to iron out (that means "to finalize") everything next Tuesday.

2.) Finish last week's homework. Everyone except for Sabina will have points taken off (Thank you Sabina :)). Please turn those into me before Wednesay night at 10:00 p.m. or more points will be taken off

3.) Read the links that are listed below. They deal with the Rome Convention, the jusrusdiction of the ICC, current tribunals that are taking place, some information regarding the Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and some relevant questions about the role of the UN and the ICC.

4.) Complete the following research in MLA format and turn those in by Monday, March 21st by 10:00 p.m.

DEFENSE

Darren: How did Qadaffi rise to power? What has he done in office economically, dilpomatically, militarilly, etc. Which of these actions have angered the world. How has the UN and other nations responded to his actions over the last 42 years?

Murielle: How has the International Criminal Court developedinto what it is today? What is the Rome Convention Statute of the International Court? Give all teh details behind when, why, how, etc. it was founded.

Christine: What is the jurisdiction of the ICC? What are its' shortcomings? Mores epcifically, what can and can't it do. Give some historical examples (especially from the Milosivec trial).

WITNESSES

Junior: What atrocities have been commiteed by the Armed Forces of Libya? Who from Libya is willing to testify against Qadaffi? What did Obrahim Dabasshi and the former UN Delegates to the UN from Libya do that has raised eyebrows? Why did they do that?

Sarah: What Human Rights atrocities have been committed in Libya? WHo can testify that these have happened?

Sabina: What is teh general background of all the chaos in Libya? Why is the ICC looking at getting involved?

PROSECUTION

Eve, Peggy, and Catherine: What does each of your respective jobs entail? What do you actually do for the ICC? Also, what formal charges have you brought up against Qadaffi and why? HINT: You are going to have to look at teh formal charges brought up in other tribunals and base your indictment on those.

Hello MUN Class and Student Union,

Please put your two cents in below in regards to the M2UN. We need the following things to be sorted by tomorrow...

1.) When are we going to hold this conference?

2.) Who will we invite?

3.) Where will we hold this conference?

4.) Where will the delegates sleep?

5.) Where will the delegates sleep?

6.) How will the delegates be fed?

7.) How much, if anything, will we charge delegates in order to break even?

8.) How many conferences will we have?

9.) What will be the topic of our conferences?

10.) Why are we having our conference? What is our Charter? Please see the real UN's charter and come up with some ideas of what we should put in our Mingdao Model United Nations Charter. We will vote on that Tuesday afternoon.

Teacher David needs to have a schedule and an outline which he can show all the heads of the department by tomorrow afternoon. I need the same thing so I can send something out to any other perspective schools. By the way, I met another teacher who is teaching Model United nations in Taichung, so we may have another school that would be able to send some kids.
